UN Certification for Reconditioned Drums
UN Certification for Reconditioned Drums:
Reconditioned Drums are recognised within the UN Recommendations on Transport of Dangerous Goods and, in addition to other modes of transport, may be approved under ADR for Dangerous Goods transport by road - as per definitions provided under ADR Chapter 1.2.1 (definitions)
The UK Department for Transport operate a "Reconditioners Scheme" for registered companies to process, inspect, leak test and mark reconditioned drums for use with Dangerous Goods.
The Reconditioners Scheme is available for both steel drums and plastics drums - with certification details dependant on the specific approvals applied to individual, approved reconditioners
Each approved reconditioner will have a UN marking and number issued that is specific to them - based on their unique company reference number, drum type and performance level. A formal certificate is issued to each reconditioner for each type of drum approved - this should be available for inspection by customers wishing to purchase reconditioned drums for use with Dangerous Goods.
Each reconditioner is visited and inspected on a regular basis by specialist consultants acting on behalf of the UK Authority (DfT) to check their compliance with all aspects of the scheme - including checks on the company's quality systems, equipment calibration, as well as production staff knowledge and understanding of the Reconditioning Scheme and significance of the UN markings.
