Use of Pallets for Transport & Storage of Steel Drums

1.       Introduction

The Industrial Packaging Association (IPA) is the leading UK trade body for manufacturers, distributors and reconditioners of Industrial Packaging and serves to represent its members within parliament, government agencies, enforcement bodies and the media. This CoP is in line with both SEFA (European Steel Drum Manufacturers Association) and EPAL (European Pallet Association) recommendations.

2. Purpose

Steel drums are designed to be safe and durable for use with a wide variety of products. However, the use of correct pallets for support of steel drums is an important consideration to enhance the safe storage, transport, handling, movement and protection of the packaging. The purpose of this Code of Practice is to provide clear guidance as to the most suitable types and designs of pallets for use with empty steel packaging within the scope of reference.

3. Scope

The recommendations are for empty steel drums of both removable lid and closed head design, with capacities from 200 – 220 litres for use with both liquids and solids / powders.  This includes steel drums manufactured to meet UN standards for Dangerous Goods Use as well as steel drums manufactured for products which are not classified as dangerous goods.

4. Recommendations Pallet designs:

CP3   (1140mm x 1140mm)  4 way Wood Pallet.  Heat-Treated & Non Heat-Treated.

For use with empty steel drums – both new and reconditionedCP9   (1140mm x 1140mm)  4 way Wood Pallet.  Heat-Treated & Non Heat-Treated. For use with empty and filled steel drums –both new and reconditioned.

CP3 & CP9 Pallets are compliant with ISO 6780

Wrapping:

Stretch wrapping may be used to encircle the pallet and drum up to the first rolling hoop of the drum – approx 1/3 up the drum body.Strapping may be used to attach drums to the pallet – this should be around the outer perimeter of drums on the pallet with an additional strap over the top through the centre line of the drum load.

Configurations:

Up to 4 drums may be placed onto each pallet on a single level.
