New UN Category for Waste Packaging for Recycling
Posted on August 8th 2014 by Phil Pease
A new UN Category (UN3509) will come into effect from 1st January 2015 for any used packaging that has contained Dangerous Goods and is being sent for disposal through recycling such as scrap reclamation, energy recovery or other such 'non-reuse' methods.
This UN transport requirement will not be applied to used packaging being sent for repair, reuse, reconditioning, remanufacture or rebottling - ie; being maintained within its original function as a package. Such packaging will continue to benefit from the allowances under Transport Category 4 of the Table in ADR Chapter 188.8.131.52.3
Any IPA member requiring additional information on this new UN category and how it affects the transport and disposal of used industrial packaging should contact the IPA prior to the 1st January 2015.
